Intergroup on Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity at the European Parliament
15.10.2014
The European Parliament’s Intergroup on Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity has been operating successfully since 1982. It has been a key factor of progress in the past decades to improve the quality of life of hundreds of million EU citizens. In the last parliamentary term (2009-2014), around 40 MEPs - representing most of the Member States and all of the political parties - supported this Intergroup. AGE has always closely worked with the Intergroup to represent older persons’ voice in EU debates.

The Intergroup on Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity is an effective platform to address issues linked to demographic change, providing a cross-party forum for in-depth discussion and concerted action It also helps bring the EU closer to its citizens by proposing measures to address their concerns and meet their expectations of an EU that helps them cope with demographic change in a positive way.

Over the coming months, MEPs will be working on a number of important dossiers that can make a real difference to the lives of EU citizens by helping Europe address its demographic shift, such as the EC Agenda for Jobs, Growth, Fairness and Democratic Change, the social assessments of the national reform programmes in the frame of the European Semester process, the draft Directive on equal treatment in access to goods and services, the draft Directive on the accessibility of public sector websites, the upcoming release of the European Accessibility Act and the future of the Digital Agenda for Europe. Intergroup members will have a great role to play to bring their expertise here.

Tulip Foundation is encouraging all those interested to send a letter to the Bulgarian MEPs  asking them to vote on the Intergroup in the autumn. Competition will be difficult. Their support will be therefore crucial to ensure that Europe is ready to make the ageing of its population an asset for economic and social growth. The Intergroup is part of these efforts.
