The themes that were suggested for discussion at the meeting included:
- Principles and conditions for realising to successful activities and projects for social inclusion of elderly people;
- Inclusion of elderly people in planning and implementation of these activities;
- Possibilities for effective and permanent process of consultations with elderly people on problems and policies that concern them.
More than 50 non-governmental organisations from around the country expressed their interest to take part in the meeting. Representatives of 20 organisations, that are implementing various social activities aimed at elderly people participated in the meeting.
The participants shared their experience in working with elderly people. Various models of social inclusion were presented – public council of elderly people at the municipality; elderly people acting as social assistants and home assistants of their mates and neighbours; pensioners engaged as volunteers in hospitals taking care of seriously ill children and lonely people; teenagers teaching computer and internet skills to elderly people; various interesting activities involving representatives of different generations; educating consumers (including elderly people) about their rights; pensioners providing voluntarily legal; medical and other services to people in need; etc. Unsuccessful examples and practices were also discussed as well as different ways to avoid them.
Many of the participants underlined the importance of communication with elderly people as a way to cope with their main problem – loneliness as well as the necessity of preventing social exclusion of people going into pension by offering them different opportunities for active life.
The participants stressed on the importance and the need of the involvement of elderly people in the planning of the activities and policies that concern them was - both within the organizations working with them and on a national level in programmes and policies for people over 50.
During the meeting participants discussed various themes for coming National Conference on the problems of social inclusion of elderly people that will took place in October in Sofia.
At the end of the working meeting the team of Tulip Foundation presented its new initiative “Marketplace of projects and ideas” for additional material support of Bulgarian NGOs.
