Project of the Month June 2009 - Protected housing – chance for new life, village of Krivica, Municipality of Samuil

The project aims at encouraging the development of the potential of people with mental disabilities, acquiring social skills and work habits, creating conditions for full and independent life through developing a social environment similar to family life.

There are 8 residents of the protected house - 2 men and 6 women with some form of mental disability, who have spent the biggest part of their lives in the social institution for adults with mental disabilities in the village of Samuil.

After the completion of the renovation work the building of the protected house was furnished and equipped for independent living.

There are several training programmes for the residents of the protected house, aimed at developing their skills for independent living. The Kitchen Programme focused on basic hygiene, healthy eating, etc. As a result the residents now can assess their own needs and abilities and their health condition, they can take parting planning their shopping. The Labour Therapy Programmefocuses on developing work habits as well as gardening skills.

The residents of the protected house take active part in the social life of the village. They attended the traditional fete of the municipality, took part in the folklore events and celebrations, they were invited to the celebrations of the school in the village of Samuil.
