29 April - European day of Solidarity between Generations

2014-07-28

European day of Solidarity between Generations is a traditionalcampaign for 29 April – a day for communication, sharing and respect among people from all generations. The aim is to encourage various joint activities of people from different generations and to bring the attention of the society to solidarity between people. 29 April is marked as a European Day of Solidarity between generations since 2008 when the European union adopted the day in order to draw the public attention to the need of adequate policies for older people in the EU. Solidarity between generations plays a key role in the development of just and sustainable systems as a response to the economical, demographic and social challenges that we are currently facing.

Solidarity between generations

The European Day of Solidarity between Generations will be celebrated on 29 April for a 15th year. We started this initiative with our partners from AGE Platform as a day that shines light on intergenerational practices and the need for promoting a “culture” of intergenerational dialogue and cooperation in an increasingly polarised society.

In today’s society, where rapid technological advances and societal shifts increase the risk of generational divides, fostering dialogue and cooperation between different age groups is crucial. The European Day of Solidarity between Generations serves as a timely reminder of the importance of bridging these gaps and promoting understanding, empathy, and collaboration across generations.

Fostering a culture of solidarity between generations is not only about promoting mutual respect and understanding; it’s also about harnessing the collective power of diverse perspectives to tackle the challenges of our time. Whether it’s addressing climate change, promoting social justice, or navigating the complexities of an ever-changing global landscape, intergenerational collaboration can lead to more comprehensive and sustainable solutions.

Young and old people have similar needs and interests. Both need an accepting social environment and reliable material living conditions. Both must cope in a constantly changing environment and defend themselves against discrimination based on their age. And both generations long for a world in which they can live their lives in peace.

Tulip Foundation launches a campaign for 29 April, the European Day of Solidarity between generations. Solidarity is the best connection between people. It could be an open conversation, a memory, family dinner, telephone call, lesson on important subject, stroll with friends, theatre, helping hand… On this day we will call our parents, relatives and neighbours. Will tell a fairy-tale or a family story to the children. Will ask young people about their hopes and disappointments. As we all - young or old, best friends or unknown, smiling or sad, need attention and close people!
