FGC Democratizing help and welfare Congress, 19-21 October 2011, Utrecht, the Netherlands

The Family Group Conferences Congress brought together some 250 participants from around the world in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Rob van Pagee from Eigen Kracht Centrale opened the congress speaking about the need and the ground for democratizing help and welfare.

Maria Herczog, member of the UNCRC and president of European network Eurochild made a presentation about “The right of children and their families to be heard and to express their views in all matters concerning them.

Lodewijk Asscher, Alderman of Amsterdam on finances, youth and education and a deputy Mayor of Amsterdam, explained in a film ”Why I support FGC in Amsterdam”.

Prof. Dr. Hans van Ewijk presented the “Citizenship-based social work”.

Mike Doolan, former chief social worker of New Zealand spoke about the vision and the development of the Family Group Conference concept in an inspiring presentation “Letting Go is Hard To Do”.

A research made by a team of the Delft University of Technology on social returns of FGC was presented. The research clearly shows the effectiveness of FGC method.

Parallel paper presentations, panel discussions, workshops and films gave the participants opportunities for learning, sharing, exchange and contacts. They had also the chance to attend an exciting performance of the Playback Theatre Group who played different experiences from FGC.
