Older People in the Spotlight—A Legally Binding Document on Their Rights

“A Society for All Ages” is a campaign for the Day of Older People, which we celebrate every year on 1 October. We are four different generations that live and work together in a world of conflicts, growing mistrust, and alienation, and we often fail to notice how connected we are to the people around us. In this campaign, we highlight the contributions older people make to their families and communities. We include them in the conversation, listen to their stories, and support their full participation in society.

This year, the UN International Day of Older Persons is marked at a historic moment for the advancement of older people’s rights. In accordance with Human Rights Council Resolution 58/13, an open-ended intergovernmental working group (IGWG) was established with a task to draft an international legally binding instrument to promote and protect the rights of older persons. Following its first session in July 2026, the Chair of the IGWG presented a report to the Human Rights Council at its sixty-third session. The Intergovernmental Working Group will reconvene in Geneva in just a few weeks.

The International Day of Older People is an opportunity not only to reflect on the progress made, but also to continue discussions on the legally binding instrument and to work toward its adoption.

We are reaching out to colleagues, partners, and like-minded individuals - join the campaign to celebrate this day in Bulgaria so that we can show our care and appreciation for our mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers, teachers, neighbors, and friends. Organise your own initiative for Older People’s Day based on your ideas and resources. Everyone can choose the format that works best for them, whether they work with children, youth, or adults.

It’s important for all of us to show care and respect for the older adults around us. If you send us the completed brief event information form and a few photos by October 6, we’ll share them publicly.

Please, share this information with colleagues, friends, and partners.

Let’s work together to build a “Society for All Ages”!
