Project of the Year October 2010 - Children’s Police Academy – a friendly hand to the community, Haskovo
26.10.2010
Chance and Protection Association, Haskovo

The aim of the project was to increase the social engagement of children to the problems of the community through participation in the activities of Children’s Police Academy.

In total 68 children, aged 9-12, participated in Children’s Police Academy clubs in three schools in Haskovo and a school in Svilengrad. Together with the local community clubs activists they organized meetings with children in kindergartens on issues like street traffic safety; various risks around us; preservation of the environment, etc. The knowledge and skills gained by the children during their participation in the Children’s Police Academy contributes to developing responsible behavior and active attitude towards the surrounding world. While communicating with their neighbors and being in touch with their problems the children learn to be tolerant and to help others.

One of the parents of a child who is participating in the Children’s Police Academy sais: ”Since my daughter participates in the club she changed a lot. She became more self-confident, more active in school, she overcame her shyness.”

Series of trainings for specialists - teachers, policemen, secretaries of community clubs - were organised in the frame of the project. In total 21 professionals were trained to apply the model. Policemen and teachers are equal partners in most of the initiatives; they carry out the preparation of materials and organisation of the events.

There is growing interest about the to the Children’s Police Academy model not only among children in the schools. During the next school year the Children’s Police Academy will continue and develop as an additional subject in the curriculum in some of the schools in the municipality.
