For eight years the Association has been working in the area of drug addictions and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Thanks to its vast experience the organisation has the resources and can research, develop and offer adequate services meeting the real needs of people using drugs.
Based on our experience we have come to the conclusion that there is a need of a structure, which can offer more general and all encompassing services to people with drug addictions. The problem of drug addiction is very complex. On the one hand it leads to many negative consequences to the health of the addicts but also to personal, psychological, behavioural, social and legal issues. The solution should also be complex and adequate to each specific case.
To meet these needs the organisation opened a Consultative Centre for drug addicts. The services offered at the centre include: individual approach to each client, assessment of each case, psychological support and recommendation and referral to suitable rehabilitation programmes. Family therapy is also offered to the relatives of the addicts in parallel with the other services. Depending on their age and maturity clients can also attend the motivation groups. All these services offer the clients an alternative to their addiction as well as support in the process of overcoming the problem. The specialists working at the centre are: social workers, psychiatrist, psychologist, family therapist and if needed a virusologist and a lawyer. The experts provide information to the public on drugs and the consequences of drug abuse.
Among the most important results of the project are: opening the first consultative centre for dug addicts in Bulgaria, gathering a multidisciplinary team, consultations for clients and their families, network of partners and a system of procedures for referrals. The premises of the Centre have been provided by the municipality and the renovation has been made possible thanks to donations from the public and the local businesses. Two pressconferences have taken place as well as two working meetings and a lot of other informative events and consultations for the general public. In the last year 58 people have used the services of the centre, all of them drug addicts – of them 18 have received long-term consultation and 20 – short term consultation. 20 people have attended the informative meeting. 12 families and relations have been offered consultation. The total number of consultations is 464. 26 people have been sent to other institutions and programmes.
The Consultative Centre works for providing adequate services for drug addicts and their families in bio-psycho-social aspect.
