The project goal was to create a place for social contact of people from the third age in the village of Brushlianitsa.
20 volunteers from the village took pat in the renovation of the premise which was to become the Day Centre. The availability of a computer encouraged some of the elderly people to learn how to use it and the women from the mayor’s office were happy to teach them.
After an initial research among the local people, topics were chosen for healthcare lectures which took place at the centre. The local GP together with the health worker from Brushlianitsa and the medical assistant from a neighbouring village spoke to the people about diabetes, high blood pressure, hepatitis, flu, etc.
Three clubs were started and they have regular meeting at the centre – knitting, bee-keeping and gardening. The women from the knitting club organised an exhibition of their work for the International Women’s Day. The members of the other two clubs are also very happy that they can meet regularly and exchange experience.
Every month a social worker from Pleven visits the village and uses the day centre for his meetings with those who need advice and support. A blood pressure monitor has also been provided to be used by the people at the centre.
The opening of the day centre was a memorable event both for the people from the village and those who come to live here only in the summer. For the first time for the last 20 years something new has been established – a place for social contacts, exchange of experience and information as well as for offering services such as filling in documents, copying, blood pressure monitoring.
Pleven Municipality is funding the salary of one person to run the club and the running costs. The Chitalishte and the mayor’s office are doing their best to expand the services and provide the necessary resources for the club’s activities.
